Dr. Ed's head is spinning a long-lost 'son' has just been sent over to his office by the temp agency, his shopping-addicted wife seems to have disappeared, and the clinical trial that he is running for a revolutionary new anti-depressant might well be going off the rails. But we needn't worry about Dr. Ed he is in control of everything, including himself. Thus begins Skinner Boxed, the first of two thematically linked novellas that comprise White Mythology. In the second piece, Love's Alchemy, five narrators deliver stories of betrayal that are nested like Russian dolls, stories that link an attempted seduction in Tokyo in 1987 to a brotherly schism that erupts during a bottle rocket game of 'war' in 1970s Massachusetts. From boys who poison their teacher's plants to men who compulsively urinate into rivers, these strange (and strangely connected) monologues drop the reader into the pitch-black dunk tank of the soul."

Between the two novellas I liked the first better.Although neither is really easy to follow, the first, Skinner Boxed, went more smoothly for me. It's the story of a man, a psychiatrist, who has his life perfectly in order, he thinks, until suddenly it isn't. The revelations are both fascinating and funny, especially, I think, for those who have an interest in psychology and its ups and downs. The main character is developed very well, and is quite clever, even when just talking to himself and his dog.
The second, was more confusing to me. It's about a young woman in Japan, who I believe is native to another, English speaking country, though she is half Japanese. It concerns her love life, and relationships with very widely differing men. She seems to enjoy pitting them against each other, even if only in her own mind. Much of the dialogue is witty and sharp, which is enough to have kept me interested, even though I had trouble empathizing with the main character.
I'd recommend the book for those who love reading for the writing itself, rather than the characters or the plots, which are a little murky.

White Mythology WD Clarke 9780991710034 Books Reviews
I look forward to reading more from this author, both novellas kept me interested in different ways and I felt both had something different to say and did it well. I found humor in both stories and aspects of seriousness but not so much that you feel dragged down. There is a clear use of knowledge and understanding of psychological issues which I found quite fascinating and if you are someone who also likes to challenge yourself then I think you will too.
This one is a slow starter but worth sticking with. The tempo of the writing drew me in and I found myself thinking about my evening reading during my work days. Characters are engaging and the story sttays interesting throughout.I have already recommended this book and ordered a hard copy to read again later! It is the kind of book that makes one want to seek out other works by the same author.Could be filed under a few different genres as it includes good storytelling, psychological and emotional insights. I'm telling all of my friends and family about this one!!
Both novellas Skinner Boxed and Love's Alchemy were an interesting read in their own rights. Firstly you have Skinner Boxed whose focus is Dr. Ed, a psychiatrist who whilst trying to do his job and help others and listen to their problems, finds himself beginning to lose some control over his own life and find himself facing his own misfortunes. The second, Love's Alchemy, gives you something completely different but still an intriguing and colorful read and at the end you feel quite satisfied in the connections you make when it all comes together. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a little something different!
Multi-layered from beginning to end, I found Clarke's writing to be sharp, witty, and thought provoking. The character portrayal is on-point and this is where his writing shone for me. The plot was a little confusing in places, and I wasn't sure why there were two parts to the book, although this did fascinate me. The first part, Skinner Boxed, is humorous, engaging and well developed in terms of the character of Dr. Ed. The second part 'Loves Alchemy' is striking, fleeting into different lives, and carrying with it some poignant messages. Highly recommend this book for its uniqueness and creative elements.
I enjoyed both of the novellas in White Mythology for different reasons. Love's alchemy many may find un-relatable but I think the point is, don't we all have your flaws at the end of the day and what is in our mind is ours and no one else's. The same could be said for Dr. Ed and his daily struggles and just general living of his life of which he feels he has so much control over, there's a sort of dark humor about both of these characters lives that I really appreciated.
White Mythology by W.D. Clarke is a fascinating read. Written in a style similar to a British comedy. White Mythology has aspects of a dry British humor coupled with witty banter and fast-paced action sequences, which works and works will. It is written for an educated reader, but not overly written in regards to using ‘big’ words that only academic scholars can understand. The details are sound, giving the reader a true sense of empathy, towards the characters. The various narrations also give a very dynamic stance on the story itself.
From the first few pages of White Mythology, where Clarke goes into great comedic detail to explain the routine of Dr. Ed's daily ablutions, I knew I was going to be on board with the sense of humour. It carried me along nicely and I found the humor well placed and entertaining. The character is quite dry, but highly educated and it is funny to see how his thought process works. It is made all the more interesting because he is a psychiatrist and you can tell that the author knows what he is talking about. The second part of the book I found to be softer and added an interesting comparison. I am intrigued to read more from this author.
