A short, sexy and scary read.
The Benson hotel in Portland, Oregon might look like your ordinary, swanky turn-of-the century hotel, but deep in the heart of this historic icon, lie a few restless souls with secrets that won't stay buried.
Amateur ghost hunters (and your favorite "will they or won't they" pair) Perry Palomino and Dex Foray spend an evening exploring the hotel for their Internet show "Experiment in Terror" - but this is no ordinary hotel and this is no ordinary episode. There's someone here in the Benson, someone dead, who will push the boundaries of what the duo know about ghosts and challenge Perry's very notion of the truth.
The Benson is a short novella in the Experiment in Terror Series. It occurs between books #2 (Red Fox) and #3 (Dead Sky Morning) but can also be read as a standalone and is the perfect primer for anyone interested in the best-selling series.
The Benson Experiment in Terror #25 edition by Karina Halle Paranormal Romance eBooks
The Benson is a very short, little novella that takes place between book 2 Red Fox and Book 3 Dead Sky Morning. It can also be read as an introduction to the series by someone trying to figure out if they have any interest in delving into the first full length novel. You pretty much get a snapshot of the series in The Benson.Perry and Dex are internet, reality show ghost hunters; Perry has feelings for Dex; Dex flirts with her shamelessly despite that he has a perfect “Wine Babes” girlfriend; Perry has self esteem issues and possibly Body Dysmorphic Disorder and her self-loathing wears a little thin; and despite her insecurities Perry is the real “ghost magnet” star of the show. She also tends to end up on the receiving end of Dex shoving her into cold dark creepy places and then winding up alone with the ghosts. If she were a real person I would get her a t-shirt that says “she who goes first, goes alone”.
The Benson sees Perry and Dex investigating an old hotel with a history of hauntings. One of the most notable being the ghost of Parker Hayden, a 1930’s shipping magnate who lost his fortune and killed himself in the hotel laundry room. I really like Perry when she is in ghost hunting mode. She is the person she thinks Dex thinks she is – the fearless brave girl who laughs in the face of danger (well OK the last part is pushing it, but only an idiot laughs in the face of danger – Perry however does look it resolutely in the eye while shaking in her Doc Martins). I do not like the Perry who is pathetic and whiny – hating on Dex’s girlfriend Jenn because she is jealous and insecure and lacks confidence and obsesses over her giant butt and thunder thighs that she may or may not have (and seriously, if you’re that concerned: eat less and exercise and shut up). I’m still not sure how I feel about Dex. On the one hand he is a charismatic character; but on the other I’m getting awfully sick of him amping up the flirtation with Perry when he has a girlfriend– and one he lives with at that.
Overall the story was entertaining, and Perry learns more about her ghost hunting abilities. It’s a nice segue between full length novels in the series.

The Benson Experiment in Terror #25 edition by Karina Halle Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
I know I said in my last review that I didn't like books that are less than 100 pages BUT the exception to that is when the book is a novella. I'm not a big fan of novella's, I don't think 100-ish pages is enough (for me) to get to know the characters or get too invested in the story. But novellas that are part of a series are a different story. We already know and love the characters and the story and we get a bonus short story to keep us semi-satisfied until we can read the next book.
Dex and Perry's next assignment for their web show is at The Benson hotel which is supposedly haunted by ghost. Of course, Dex and Perry get themselves into trouble when they get locked in one of the underground floors. And OF COURSE Dex has to leave Perry to get help. Since supernatural creatures seem to love Perry, she has a few encounters with them. Although they weren't as scary as the encounters from Red Fox, they still gave me the creeps!
Dex and Perry have spent more time together and have survived more than a few close calls. But the tension between them is still high and things between them are as awkward as ever! We do get a few more flirty exchanges with them that will have you smiling like an idiot. The Benson was a short but great story that you can read in less than an hour. I don't think it's necessary to read before book 3 but you do get to see Dex and Perry slowly creep closer, and who doesn't want that? I for one and ready for more Derry and I also want to meet the Wine Babe (Dex's girlfriend, hopefully not for long).
Some of my favorite quotes from The Benson
Destruction and fear seem to follow Dex and I wherever we go. That is the nature of the ghost hunting business, even the one that's only on the Internet.
"Well you're not hot..."
I shoot him a wry look.
"I mean, not internally hot. Outside is another matter." He winks at me.
"Are you okay?" he asks and I can hear the worry in his voice. He likes to surprise me by acting human from time to time.
4.5 spooky stars...this is such a fun series and this novella was a great addition...the story finds Perry and Dex in the Benson Hotel which is, of course, said to be haunted...they stumble and bumble through the clues and embark on a haunting journey to discover the facts about the true nature of one man's untimely death...in true Perry and Dex fashion this adventure is laced with sarcasm and wit as well as some precarious situations that (mostly Perry) they have to endure which are both terrifying and hysterical at the same time...in addition, we get to continue to watch the growing chemistry between our beloved characters as they dance around their true feelings both believing they are not what the other wants or needs...this is a short read filled with all the elements that I have come to love about this series)
