The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are typified by an enemy who strikes from the shadows; sniper fire, RPG's, and suicide bombers are his modus operandi. But above all others, this enemy's favorite weapon is the improvised explosive device (IED). Ranging from the simplest of construction to the most sophisticated of all gadgetry, the IED represents a grave threat to American soldiers all over the world. In this kind of fight, there is only one kind of soldier uniquely qualified to deal with these destructive weapons of war the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technician.
With over 8 years of experience in EOD, Staff Sergeant John Breuer knows a thing or two about danger. As an EOD team leader, he's encountered more than his fair share of IEDs. But when he's betrayed by the Iraqi Army and sold to insurgents, this bomb technician must confront a different kind of horror being listed as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown (DUSTWUN).
Tortured and exploited for propaganda purposes, Jack must use his skills as a soldier and as a bomb technician to escape his captors, before they have a chance to remove his head from his body.
An action-packed adventure, DUTY STATUS WHEREABOUTS UNKNOWN, is a thoughtful tale of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and the soldiers who fight there, with a focus on realism and technical details that only experience can convey. Devoid of politics, this novel tells an unblemished story of America's fight in the Global War on Terror, and of Her soldiers' day-to-day struggle.

I was looking for a book to read that didn't say the guy was in the military and the rest of the book was the man and his attempt to seduce the first girl he runs into or an old girlfriend. Hey, I love the sexy parts of life but the story almost always ends with the guy leaving the military so his girl won't worry about him not coming home. Back to the book. The cover wasn't really enticing but the review seemed interesting so I purchased the book. What a great purchase! Was it based on total reality? Probably not but it did allow the reader a hero that we would all want to be put in his situation. I believe the author built diverse and interesting plots throughout the book and the character development was well written. One of the comments in the book talked about all of our military doing their jobs to protect our country and how many of them gave the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of our country being the real heroes. AMEN! He goes on to say that those stories are many times covered up with stories of the latest actor/actress going into rehab. The only part I was disappointed with is the end where he leaves the military after the incident . Mr. Cody, well done, waiting for your next book.Product details

Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown edition by Jonathon Cody Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I just finished reading this novel and have to say that despite that it's fiction, it is a 100% perfect portrayal of today's Army EOD tech. I am an EOD tech in the US Army and am passing this book around the shop for more opinions. Many reviews I have read compare it to the movie Hurt Locker but I would not even put it remotely close to that joke of a film. The only flaws (minor) that I have found with this book are that 1.) there are grammatical errors that an editor should have spotted (perhaps release a corrected second edition) and 2.)some of the technical details explained in the creation of home made explosives would not really work but perhaps that is a good thing since anyone in the world can read this book and certain people may try these methods. Overall, I loved this book and will always recommend it to anyone interested in EOD, especially ARMY EOD.
Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown is an unapologetic and uncompromising story of a bomb technician in the Iraq theater. Unlike other war novels which spend pages contemplating the thoughts, wants, and fears of the soldiers or delve into the futility of war or the horror of battle, Jonathan Cody paints a simple and honest picture of a soldier who does not care about the deeper issues of the war. The main character, Jack, smokes and drinks, makes homosexual jokes with his friends and calls the enemy racial epithets. This novel rejects politically correct opinions and is brutal in its examination of the Iraq conflict. The Iraq army sells out the American troops, the Iraqi police are planting many of the IEDs, the terrorist leaders are not believers but business men playing off of religious zealotry to bring in money, and the Iraqi population in general ranges from passive approval of the anti-American attacks to outright aggression against the US occupational forces.
The novel is brilliant in its basic honesty and straightforward approach. The social commentaries are delivered in a few simple sentences that deliver a devastating view on American priorities and the war in general because it is in such gross contrast to the situations in the story (like the story of a soldier being kidnapped is less important to the public than a story of a dead adult-film star).
This is a good read, not a deep sample of literature. The only times when the story goes into small details is when the author describes the details of the bombs and how they work (probably taken form the author's own experiences). It is an action adventure novel that uses its simplicity to tell a fun story while at the same time making the reader look at the war on terror in a new light.
Be warned for the nit-picky audience there are grammatical errors in the writing that an editor should have caught.
Having read many books about the war in Iraq, this is the first fictional novel that is centered around the current conflict and I have to say that I was very impressed with this novel and the work that the author put into it. Most of the books that I have read about the war in Iraq are based on first hand accounts by those who were there fighting on the ground such as, "Eight Lives Down" and "From Baghdad With Love". However, the story behind "Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown" takes this literary artform of life in a war zone a step further and combines a creative mixture of suspense, nail-biting excitement and the strength and resolve of the human spirit in the face of impossible odds.
The novel's plotline is eerily similar to the blockbuster films, "The Hurt Locker" and "Rescue Dawn" where the story's main character Staff Sergent Jack Breuer an Army EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) technician is betrayed by the corrupt forces in the Iraqi Army who turn on him while he and his colleague are operating on an IED behind emeny lines. Breuer is then captured and held prisoner by brutal and deadly Iraqi insurgents where he is savagely tortured and exploited by the enemy for political propaganda purposes. From there it is entirely up to Jack to rely on his skill as an EOD operator and steadfast courage to survive against all odds and outwit a formidable enemy.
The author repectfully takes an unbiased approach towards what has become a very sensitive and sometimes politcally heated topic of discussion on The War on Terror Reflecting on both sides of the equation from the red tape bureaucracies of the military, the ingenuity of a cunning enemy in the form of deadly devices, the dark humor, camraderie and view points of the soldiers themselves and a dead on portrayal of how today's media view the situation in general, often by blindsiding the public with other less disturbing and painful topics to distract them from what is really happening in today's complex world of pollitical instability. Author Johnathan Cody tells a very true to life story about the every man in combat and does not take the edge off the tense suspense or action. With any luck this novel might become the next runner-up for the film, "The Hurt Locker" in the theaters because the story is as good as any Hollywood movie gets in my opinion. Apart from some gramatical errors in the text, it's still worth the time to read and very enjoyable with every turn of the page.
